Why are lesbian characters in movies and TV mostly portrayed as ';lipstick'; lesbians?

Do you think the reason why this is the case is because Hollywood is trying not to offend political or religious conservatives, and also to appeal to heterosexual male audiences? For example, almost all of the main characters in ';The L Word'; are feminine.

Would you like to see more portrayals of butch lesbians onscreen in mainstream movies %26amp; TV shows?

This year, there was an American independent comedy film called ';Butch Jamie'; that actually features a butch lesbian in the lead role:

I think lipstick appeals to the broader audience not just heterosexual men. In my opinion, I believe all women like to look good from time to time and can relate to a woman who fixes herself up. It's just the femininity in all women.

To be honest, butch women, regardless how good that person may be, may not come across as very appealing just by sheer looks. Let's face it, we live in a very cynical society and to some degree are initially attracted by either (1) looks or (2) personality. Sadly, butch women are given a bad rep mainly because most do not know how to approach her. For those with an open mind relates to her by knowing who she is and the content of her character. However, I think for the most part people are just curious.Why are lesbian characters in movies and TV mostly portrayed as ';lipstick'; lesbians?
For so long lesbians were always portrayed as butch and there were complaints about that...now it's swung ariound the other way, its complaining time about that!

Don't worry, there is still Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen de Generes yabbering on TV to keep the butch image going.

I think it has more to do with reacting to the old stereotype than anything else...the political and religious conservatives would rather NOT have any shows with any lesbians, on TV or in the movies!

Would I like to see more butch lesbians portrayed on movies and TV? No thanks, I like Kathy Bates but I am sick of seeing the same thing for the last 20 years! I would rather just see the gay and lesbian characters NOT kill themselves at the end of movies! Now THAT would be an improvement!
On American television they portray all gay men as being flighty flipping there hands around with lisp voices just like Richard Simmons or Carson from Queer eye. In QAF you probably also noticed they also used Lipstick Lesbians. None of my Lesbian friends are like that. We all laugh watching how they portray gay persons on American TV. What's even funnier is when straight people try to act gay and they act just like them, so someone must be watching. If you want to watch some good television with real down to earth gay women see if you can get dvd copies of the Australian series ';Prisoner'; aka ';Cell Block H';or the British series ';Bad Girls';

for the same reason that hollywood chose lighter skinned blacks for a long time and still only pick a choose the few they do

because those powers that do the producing and programming think that lipstik and light skin is more palatable to the masses
The prettier, more feminine lesbian is appealing to str8 men AND women and admittedly to lesbians like myself. I don't believe there should be a butch/fem stereotype as most lesbians I associate with fit neither category...they are women.

I like seeing women and men being just that and their sexuality being second nature and not particularly the focus.

It's the stereotypical flaming f*g and d*ke boi that confuses the str8 when they see otherwise.
Because they've played out the Butch scene.
Let's be totally candid here.....very butch lesbians scare the bejesus out of straight men which is exactly why the local Dykes on Bikes chapters do security at many Pride events.

Nothing scares a man more than a woman he thinks might be able to kick his butt and hollywood is smart enough to know this and avoid making movie going men deal with this.
